Glue PVC Pipe

I’m assuming that you already know how to glue pvc pipe. And that you will commonly use PVC pipe glue. But I do get asked a lot about how to super glue PVC. Well, for starters I wouldn’t use super glue for this purpose for a number of reasons. It is not strong enough and because it is a consumer grade product is has solvents. The solvents in it make it dry out quickly in the bottle but also make it brittle and it is not water proof. Not something that you want to use to cement PVC that is going to have water going through it under great pressure.

Mister Glue is a commercial grade cyanoacrylate manufactured in Germany. It has been distilled several times so that the solvents have been completely distilled out. This makes it many times stronger than super glue and it has other benifits when working with PVC pipe.

Because of the strength and tenacity of this cyanoacrylate one can bond two ends of PVC pipe together permanently – they will not come apart. If you want to test this, take two small pieces and put a bead of Mister Glue around the end of one piece. Make sure that you cover all of the end as you do not want any gaps. There is no rush to get the two pieces together but it is important to get them together the way you want them the first time. Mister Glue is very fast bonding and you have VERY little to move the two pieces into place. Give the bonded material a minute to set then try and twist them apart. They won’t come apart.

Even so, full cure time is several hours. Give it 20-30 minutes or even less and hit the two pieces hard with a hammer. It will break somewhere else than were you glued it. Normally, you would leave the bond for longer before putting it under stress but the point is that this cyanoacrylate is more than up to the job.

Once cured Mister Glue is fully non toxic so if you are using in lines with potable water there is no danger of contaminating the water in any way.

Another benifit to using Mister Glue is that if you are in a tight spot and it is difficult to remove pieces to screw parts together and you do have room to fit them end to end then you can easily use this instead of PVC cement.

Repair Rubber Dinghies (Or Hypalon)

This technique will apply to pinhole leaks or tears in rubber dinghies, inflatable raft, air mattress or vinyl raft.

Blow it up hard and start spreading water with a bit of dish detergent mixed in it and watch for small bubbles. Use a magic marker to indicate the spot. Make sure there is not more than one. The valve can often be the difficulty. Ensure that the O ring is not worn or damaged. If so, replace it.

Once you have marked all of the leaks deflate the raft or mattress and use a small patch of the same material using Mister Glue’s Instant Glue. Use a large enough patch. If too small, it could come loose. Even though Mister Glue’s instant glue sets immediately, full cure time is several hours. If you can, leave it overnight.

To make the patch look less ‘patched’ cut to a shape of your liking. Make it look decorative.

If I’m out fishing or any kind of boating, particularly in something inflatable, I always have a bottle of Mister Glue with me. And some patches. Even a small tear can be repaired this way and get you back to where you started. Mister Glue is handy to have out on a trip as it can repair neoprene and most of your fishing gear, lures, etc. It has been know to use Also, you can use Mister Glue to repair your lures as well.

Cyanoacrylates have been used for suturing and in a pinch one could use Mister Glue to glue up a bad cut in the place of stitches. Not necessarily ideal but if you cut yourself badly and don’t have stitches…

As Mister Glue will bond almost anything to anything (including your fingers) it will help mend all your snorkeling and diving equipment. It will bond rubber to rubber for your fins or rubber to metal for a knife handle. It will repair a tear in your diving suit and remain flexible and waterproof.

Mister Glue permanently welds rubber so for a diving suit that has torn or if a seam has come apart, dry the surface and run a very small bean on one side. Press the two surfaces together and within a few short seconds you can go back in the water.

Snorkels and masks can be repaired instantly as well if there is a tear or a gasket or seam separates. As Mister Glue will bond two different materials together very well you can bond plastic to rubber as well. If you have a mask or other accessory that is leaking run a small bead along the seam and it will be fixed. Make sure that the surface is dry and clean before you apply the glue.

Mister Glue works best when the fit is completely flush. The tighter the fit the better the bond. So, make sure that the two surfaces fit together snugly. Also, Mister Glue is very, very quick. Once you have the two pieces together, particularly with rubber, you will have no time to move them around to get them in the ‘right’ place. So, before you apply the glue, practice putting the two pieces together so you know where they are going.

Mister Glue is an industrial cyanoacrylate. That means it is a very powerful super glue. Much, much stronger. It dries clear, flexible and because the solvents have been distilled out, it will not dry out in the bottle.

Take it will you when you go snorkeling and diving. Scuba divers can use for: diving fins, rubber dry suit repairs, drysuit seals, Neoprene wetsuits and dry suits, rubber dive straps, rubber watchbands and just about anything else you can think of.

Do be careful – it will bond skin in seconds – some people have even used it for cuts in emergency situations.
